We're delighted to release this report on tourism and wellbeing in Nepal's iconic Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) National Park. The report contrasts tourism, development and change over the last 30 years, drawing upon settlement and household data sets collected between 1993 and 2022.

The report:
  • identifies key issues currently undermining the wellbeing of the destination,
  • presents findings from deploying the Happiness Index survey in settlements in the Park and its buffer zone,
  • makes recommendations to strengthen the wellbeing of host communities, the Park and its environs,
  • highlights to urgent need to apply lessons from this exceptional example of community development through tourism to other sites, especially protected areas that are home to indigenous communities, around the World.

An accompanying technical report presenting more detailed findings and recommendations from the Happiness Index survey deployment, is also available for download.
